In the past few months we have seen a rapid push for same-sex marriage equality in several countries. The right and freedom to marry that should naturally be given to all, is now finally becoming law for many same-sex couples. The rate these bills are advancing at and becoming approved is dramatic, considering the fact that four countries have already approved same-sex marriage this year. Several bills are also now on the United States senate floor, which is the final stage before becoming a law.

France, New Zealand, Brazil, and Uruguay are four countries that have legalized same-sex marriage this year. American states include: Minnesota, Delaware and Rhode Island. Other states expecting marriage equality in the near future are California, New Jersey, Illinois and Hawaii.

Out of approximately 196 countries in the world, in only 15 countries are same-sex couples able to legally be recognized and married. Most countries offer civil unions or registered partnerships such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. In this case, same-sex couples are recognized and have rights, but their union is not officially called marriage. At the end of the day you don’t want to be asked “Will you Civil Union me?”

The process of legalizing marriage equality for all countries around the world has taken far too long. However, we are finally starting to see change in the last few years, and this year the legalization of same-sex marriage will hopefully continue with this trend. Marriage equality will be seen sooner rather than later for all of us.
