We’ve all had one, that one teenage actor, actress, singer or songstress that we ultimately fell head-over-heels for. They were talented, popular, starred in our favorite shows or sang our favorite songs and, most importantly, were drop dead gorgeous. Many fans all over the world idolize these people and they tend to copy many of their actions and trends. Most recently, we’ve seen people such as Justin Bieber, Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez take over the world with their lovable charm and unbelievable popularity leading to a quick rise to fame. Bieber had a quicker rise to stardom than Cyrus, Bynes and Gomez, who started their acting careers at a young, became popular and grew to build their own empires. All four built personas that fans deemed to be “perfect”, but that perfection certainly didn’t last long. The fame went to their heads and these heartthrobs began doing things that made fans lose respect for them.

Bieber, Cyrus, Gomez and Bynes have been quick to become famous and have the world fall in love with their unbelievable talent. However, their fame quickly took a downwards spiral. Justin Bieber, for example, has recently been in the public eye for committing a handful of felonies, such as reckless driving, driving under the influence, battery, and assault. Bieber and Miley Cyrus have both been criticized for marijuana use and reckless behavior. Cyrus takes a more risqué approach to her behavior. Her behavior has most recently been displayed at the VMA’s and her Bangerz tour. Selena Gomez made a statement by taking on a role in the 2012 flick Spring Breakers. She played a mature character, who committed robberies and did drugs, taking away from her “innocent”, young persona. Also, in her music, she began introducing more sexually suggestive songs and music videos, such as her 2013 hit Come and Get It. Amanda Bynes’ recent spree of inappropriate behavior including Twitter outbursts, charges for marijuana possession, and driving under the influence came as surprise for many. Bynes grew up as a “perfect” child star, a role model for many. Her recent behavior is a perfect example of how a young celebrities’ life can quickly turn upside down.

Many young people all over the world look up to these young heartthrobs. When they start acting recklessly, they’re a negative impact on their followers’ behaviors. Young teens may think it’s cool to smoke marijuana because it seems like that is all Amanda Bynes and Justin Bieber have been doing. Or the erratic behavior displayed by Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus can influence their young fans to display a similar type of behavior. Young people are impressionable and they have the option to change their entire attitude to mimic a reckless celebrity. We can’t guarantee that celebrities aren’t going to make mistakes and disappoint their fans. Is it just smarter to prevent young people from getting so consumed with a famous figure? Past heartthrobs have ended their careers in more failure than success. Recently, only a few young celebrities, such as Hilary Duff and Raven Symone have turned out to be influential and have a positive impact on their fans. Others tend to turn to substance abuse or grow up too quickly to set a proper example for their young fan bases. With the way recent young celebrities have turned out, should we let younger generations idolize teen heartthrobs? Do we really want Bieber and Cyrus wannabes running our world in the future?
